Birmingham is in its 13th straight season in the Championship, consistently landing in the bottom half of the league table for the past seven seasons, narrowly avoiding relegation. This season is proving to be no exception. Currently, the Blues sit 19th with 32 points from 30 matches, a mere three points from the danger zone, despite having played one game less. Despite efforts to change the team’s downward trajectory by replacing the coach, the move was not successful. After an initially promising start under coach Tony Mowbray, they suffered three consecutive losses.

Last season saw Blackburn Rovers fighting for the playoffs, but their performance this season is far from satisfactory. They currently sit in the 17th position with just 36 points, which is closer to the relegation zone than the playoffs. Even though they are 11 points away from the playoffs, they still have one game in hand. Despite their current ranking, there is potential for improvement if they can produce consistent positive results under the guidance of the new coach. However, their defense needs significant improvement as they are currently one of the weakest teams in the Championship in this aspect.

Birmingham vs Blackburn pick: Over 2.5 goals

Birmingham’s performance has been poor lately, with three consecutive losses and no goals scored. However, these losses occurred away from home. We are confident that Birmingham can score at least a few goals against one of the league’s weakest defensive teams. In their last two home games, Birmingham managed to score two goals against both Hull City and Swansea. These teams have shown much stronger defense than Blackburn.

Blackburn holds the top position in the league for achieving over 2.5 goals, with three or more goals being scored in 80% of their matches (24 out of 30 rounds). Their attacking game has been consistent throughout the season, however, their defense is a cause for concern, particularly in away matches. In their last five away matches, they have conceded either three or four goals each time!

In the last head-to-head match in November 2023, Blackburn emerged victorious with a 4:2 win. Taking into account these factors, we are of the opinion that a bet of over 2.5 goals is the most secure option for this Championship match.

Birmingham team news

John Ruddy, the goalkeeper, was absent from the last two games due to an injury. Reports from the English media suggest that he will probably be sidelined for the Blackburn match as well. Coach Mowbray had intended to recruit a substitute goalkeeper during the transfer window, but the club did not agree. Consequently, Neil Etheridge is expected to be in the goal. Etheridge’s performance in the previous two games was extremely poor, making him the worst player on the field.

In addition to Ruddy, other players who were absent in the previous games, namely George Hall, Dion Sanderson, and Alfie Chang, will continue to be sidelined. Alex Pritchard, who was signed this winter, is also expected to miss the next match due to a calf injury. He is likely to return on February 17th for the game against Sunderland.

Blackburn team news

Jon Dahl Thomasson’s departure from the club led to the appointment of John Eustace as the new manager on February 9th. In Eustace’s debut game, the team triumphed over Stoke with a 3:1 victory.

Injuries are expected to keep starting left fullback Harry Pickering and top central defender Hayden Carter off the field. Contrastingly, Ryan Hedges has bounced back from a severe injury and was present on the field in the last match.
