Once a reliable team in the Premier League, Sunderland went through a rough patch in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons, being relegated to League One, the third tier of English competition. They made a gradual comeback to the Championship and last season, they reached the Premier League playoffs but were knocked out in the Semi-Finals by Luton, who later secured promotion. This season, the Black Cats are on the brink of the playoffs, currently in 9th place, and just two points shy of a playoff position.
Huddersfield had a rough season last year, managing to save themselves from relegation with ten points from their final four games. The Terriers have had a similarly difficult start to their current season, presently sitting at 21st, a mere four points from the relegation zone. As the season continues, their performance seems to be deteriorating. However, it’s fair to mention that they are grappling with injury issues.
Sunderland vs Huddersfield pick: Sunderland to win and cover the -1 AH spread
Sunderland experienced an impressive run prior to the international break, securing seven points in three matches. However, their winning streak ended with a 2:0 loss to Plymouth, despite the Black Cats delivering a stronger performance and deserving more from the game. Now, it is anticipated they will regain their footing with a home victory over struggling Huddersfield. Sunderland’s home record has been solid, with victories in five out of eight matches (62.5%), and a two or more goal margin in four of those five wins.
Huddersfield’s performance has been dismal, securing a mere two points from their last five matches and managing to score only two goals! Even in the games where they managed to win points, against Southampton and Watford, the Terriers were thoroughly outplayed and were on the verge of losing.
Given this season’s performances from both teams, factoring in Sunderland’s home advantage and Huddersfield’s poor form, we would be surprised if the Black Cats didn’t secure an easy victory.

Huddersfield team news
This season, Huddersfield is grappling with significant injury issues. The latest to join the injury list is Kian Harratt, who had to exit the game against Southampton just 21 minutes in due to a hamstring injury. Adding to the woes, the team’s top goalkeeper, Lee Nicholls, was absent from the previous game due to a neck injury and his participation in the forthcoming game remains uncertain.
In addition to Harratt and Nicholls, five other players who were absent from the previous games will continue to be sidelined. These include Danny Ward, Oliver Turton, Jack Rudoni, Patrick Jones, and Loick Ayina.
Coach Darren Moore expressed satisfaction following a 1:1 draw against Southampton. He deemed it a significant result for his team, given that they were short of several players and some had to play with restricted minutes. “Given our current circumstances and availability, I’m truly pleased for the players,” the coach remarked.
