Mauritania will continue their hunt for a first win at the AFCON finals when they face Algeria in the final match of Group D on Tuesday evening.

The Mauritanian national team is participating in the AFCON finals for only the third time. In their past two appearances, they were knocked out at the group stage and it seems likely to happen again this time. The team, led by Amir Abdou, started this year’s tournament with a close 0-1 loss to Burkina Faso, and suffered another loss in their last match, falling 2-3 to Angola.

They also need the other group game to result in a decisive victory, not a draw, to ensure their automatic qualification for the subsequent round.

Mauritania is longing for their maiden victory at the AFCON, however, their current form is disappointing. With no wins in their last six games and not scoring in four of those matches, the Mauritanians are struggling.

The upcoming Tuesday match will mark the initial encounter between these two countries at the Africa Cup of Nations, although they have previously faced off in five friendly matches. Algeria emerged victorious in four of those matches, netting 14 goals and only letting in two. Given their track record and what Algeria stands to gain, I’m rooting for the Desert Warriors to triumph.
