Following their unexpected progression to the Copa del Rey Finals by defeating Real Sociedad, Mallorca will proceed with their season by hosting a La Liga match against the most intriguing team in Spain this year, Girona.
Mallorca’s performance in La Liga this season is not matching up to their previous success, particularly when compared to the previous year when they placed 9th, comfortably distanced from the relegation zone. In fact, they were just three points shy of securing a place for European competitions! However, this year, the Balearic Islands team is trailing behind, currently sitting in 16th place, dangerously close to the relegation zone with a mere six points gap. But all is not lost. They have been performing excellently in the Cup, positioning themselves to potentially secure their second Copa del Rey trophy and a European qualification. Remarkably, on their journey to this potential triumph, Mallorca has already defeated their upcoming La Liga contender, Girona.
Girona, one of the most delightful surprises in European football, had many fans hoping they would emulate Leicester’s renowned title run from 2015/16. They managed to keep up with Real Madrid for most of the season. However, after suffering two losses in their last three games, the championship dream now appears significantly more difficult. Nevertheless, a top-four finish would still be a significant accomplishment, and they are on track to achieve this considering they are ten points ahead of Athletic Bilbao, who are in fifth place.
Mallorca vs Girona pick: Both teams to score
Mallorca’s offensive performance this season hasn’t been impressive, managing to net only 23 goals in 26 rounds. However, they have recently begun to score consistently, having done so in their last four matches across all competitions. This includes games against Real Sociedad, one of the league’s top defensive teams. We feel confident that they can score against Girona, a team that has had difficulty maintaining a clean sheet when playing away.
Girona boasts the best offensive record in La Liga with 57 goals in 26 rounds, averaging 2.2 goals per game. Therefore, the possibility of them scoring at least once against Mallorca is quite high. However, given their track record of only four clean sheets in 17 away games in all competitions, we have little confidence in their defense maintaining a clean sheet.
This season, the teams crossed paths once in the league and once in the Cup. Girona triumphed with a score of 5:3 in the league game held at their home ground, whereas Mallorca claimed victory in the Cup game at their home turf with a scoreline of 3:2. Furthermore, both teams managed to score in their two head-to-head matches last season. This trend is noticeable in their head-to-head encounters and based on this evidence, we anticipate another match where both teams will score.

Mallorca team news
Central defender Antonio Raillo, who served his one-game suspension vs Alaves, is likely to return to the starting lineup. Meanwhile, another central defender, Siebe Van Der Heyden, will continue his suspension and will not play in the Girona game.
The team is expected to have no additional injuries. Pablo Maffeo is the sole player who will be absent from the game, having been sidelined for the past one and a half months because of a knee injury.
Upon reaching the Copa del Rey finals, Coach Javier Aguirre lauded his players during a media interaction. “In the locker room, more players had relegations than titles,” he noted. Despite this, according to Spanish media, the Mexican coach has yet to renew his contract with Mallorca and might depart during the summer transfer window.

Central defender Daley Blind, a key figure, will be benched for his third game in a row due to a foot injury, probably until late March. Additionally, Joel Roca and Toni Villa will continue to be sidelined due to ACL injuries.
Several top teams this season, including Barcelona, showed interest in Coach Michel Sanchez. However, the 48-year-old recently stated in an interview that he has no intentions of leaving and expressed his desire to guide Girona in the Champions League next season.
