Despite being the fourth smallest nation in Africa in terms of population, Cape Verde has emerged as the most surprising team in the tournament. The much-loved Blue Sharks remain unbeaten in the AFCON, holding their own against heavily favored teams such as Ghana and Egypt. Their success cannot be attributed to mere luck, despite the small size of their home country. Many of their players play for reputable European teams. After viewing all their games, it’s clear that they’re performing exceptionally well. It wouldn’t be a shock if they emerge as the tournament’s victors.

South Africa’s performance in recent years has been less than stellar as they failed to qualify for both the previous AFCON and the last three World Cups. However, they displayed strong performance in Group E of this year’s AFCON, which included Mali, Namibia and Tunisia, and secured the second spot. Despite Morocco’s superior game in the 1/8 Finals, South Africa managed to triumph and advance to the next stage of the competition.

Cape Verde performed admirably in this tournament, securing victories in three out of four matches. Their only non-win was a 2:2 draw against Egypt, a match that took place after Cape Verde had already guaranteed their spot in the knockout stage. Despite the draw, Cape Verde put up a strong fight in the match against Egypt, proving to be as dangerous as their opponents, even if the statistics didn’t reflect it.

In our view, South Africa was consistent throughout the tournament, but their final victory against Morocco had a fair amount of luck involved. Despite being completely dominated by Morocco, who missed a penalty and had a goal disallowed by VAR, they managed to secure a win.

Several years ago, it seemed absurd to consider Cape Verde as the preferred team over South Africa. However, we currently think that the Blue Sharks have a slight edge over the well-known “Bafana Bafana” and anticipate seeing them in the Semi-Finals.
