In the past decade, Burkina Faso has demonstrated a strong performance in the AFCON, reaching the semifinals or finals in three of the last five tournaments.

Going into this tournament, the Stallions are in good shape, having secured victories in three out of their last five matches in all competitions. This includes a 2-1 triumph over DR Congo in their last preparatory game.

Since 2019, Mauritania has qualified for three straight AFCONs but has not managed to win any of their six previous group stage matches. At the 2019 competition in Cameroon, Al-Murabitun lost all three games.

Amir Abdou’s team has recently struggled, not securing a win in their last four matches and failing to score in the last three. Their string of poor performances began with a 2:1 loss to Burkina Faso in a friendly match in October. This was followed by a disappointing 2:0 defeat to DR Congo in the beginning of their World Cup qualification campaign, and a 0:0 draw against South Sudan.

Burkina Faso has a superior head-to-head record against Mauritania, with two victories and a draw from their four past encounters. Nonetheless, this will be the inaugural meeting between these countries at the AFCON.
