- Competition: La Liga
- Date: Sunday, 10th December 2023
- Kickoff: 20:00 UK / 21:00 CET
- Venue: Estadio Olímpico Lluís Companys (Barcelona)
Two Catalonian teams, Barcelona and Girona, are set to face off at Estadio Olímpico Lluís Companys in Barcelona on Sunday evening.
Barcelona is currently undergoing a transition period due to financial issues, but they are managing to stay competitive through their academy and smart free transfers. Despite winning the La Liga title last season, it is clear that they are not performing at the standard typically expected of the Catalan team. They have failed to progress from the group stages of the Champions League over the past two seasons, a situation that would have been unimaginable a few years ago. However, this season, Barcelona is faring well, having already secured their place in the next phase of the UCL and maintaining a solid position in the domestic league. They are currently in third place, trailing only four points behind the top two teams, Real Madrid and Girona.
Girona are having an exceptional season, a performance that many global football fans hope will mirror Leicester’s 2015/16 season. The Blanquivermells, as they are popularly known, have exceeded expectations and are matching pace with Spain’s top teams. As we approach mid-season, it’s clear their success isn’t due to luck or a temporary hot streak. Presently, Girona, holding 38 points, are neck and neck with Real Madrid for the league’s top position.
Barcelona vs Girona pick: Girona to cover the +1 AH spread
Over the past month and a half, Barcelona’s performance has been inconsistent, winning merely four out of seven matches across all competitions. True, they managed consecutive victories against FC Porto and Atletico Madrid, but their performance was not particularly impressive. Generally, Barcelona has been lacking clinical precision for quite some time, which has resulted in them not securing a win with a margin of two or more goals in their last 14 matches. Therefore, expecting them to win by two goals against a strong Girona team seems rather far-fetched.
This season, Girona are performing exceptionally well. Their single defeat came about two months ago against Real Madrid. However, this setback didn’t dampen their spirits as they continued to deliver outstanding performances, triumphing in eight out of the succeeding nine matches across all competitions.
In the last head-to-head game at Camp Nou, the match ended in a goalless draw. Considering all factors, we are confident that Girona has the ability to secure a favorable outcome at Estadio Olímpico Lluís Companys.

Barcelona team news
In the warmups for the Atletico Madrid match, Inigo Martinez sustained an injury which relegated him to the bench despite being slated for the starting lineup. The 32-year-old defender is expected to be out for the remainder of the year, as per the club’s website.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen, the first-choice goalkeeper, has been dealing with back issues since the international break and will be absent from his fourth straight game as a result. In his absence, Inaki Pena, aged 24, will continue to be their primary goalkeeping choice. Additionally, Gavi, another player who got injured during the international break, has a much more severe injury. The skilled midfielder suffered an ACL injury and will be out for the rest of the season.
Additionally, the backup full-back, Marcos Alonso, who missed the previous game against Atletico Madrid due to an injury, will also be absent for the Girona game.

Girona team news
Yangel Herrera, who sustained a muscle injury against Valencia just 12 minutes into the game, is the latest addition to the injury list. His absence may open up a starting opportunity for Ibrahima Kebe.
It is highly probable that Eric Garcia and Pablo Torre, currently on loan from Barcelona, will miss the upcoming game.
Additionally, several players who were out for most, if not all, of the season due to injuries will continue to be benched: Ricard Artero, Borja Garcia, Joel Roca, and Toni Villa.
