This season, De Topper deviates from its usual role as the title contest between the two Dutch powerhouses. A reinvigorated Ajax, currently in fifth place, is set to host PSV Eindhoven, the clear front-runners, at the Johan Cruijff Arena on Saturday, bringing a new dynamic to the match.
Ajax vs PSV Eindhoven Betting Tips: 1X (Double chance)
This clash is meant to showcase the best of Dutch football. However, the current season presents a unique scenario with a staggering 21-point gap between Ajax and the leading, seemingly invincible PSV. Despite this, a significant win in De Topper could potentially catalyze a remarkable comeback for the home team.
This was the gloomiest beginning to the domestic season for the most awarded Dutch club in their notable history. They managed only one win in the first eight premier league games. This immediately dashed any hopes of the Eredivisie title returning to the trophy cabinet of the Amsterdam giant just two months into the season.
Ajax’s string of shockingly poor results, culminating in a crushing 2-5 loss to their fierce rivals PSV Eindhoven, sent them spiraling to the bottom of the league. This disastrous run served as the final straw for Maurice Steijn. However, the club’s decision to bring in John van ‘t Schip as the new manager turned out to be the best move they could have made at the time.
Indeed, since the 60-year-old assumed leadership of the record-setting Dutch champions, the Sons of the Gods have seen an impressive improvement in their domestic performance. They have not experienced defeat in any of the 10 Eredivisie matches under John, during which they secured a remarkable nine victories and only once ended in a draw.
The only time points were lost during van ‘t Schip’s tenure was in the final exam of 2023, where a two-goal lead was lost, resulting in a dramatic 2-2 draw against Zwolle. However, the Amsterdammers are set to host their major rivals, PSV, in excellent form after starting 2024 with victories in all three matches, and a goal difference of 11-5.
Talking about the visiting team, PSV might have faced a minor slump in their form in the second last week of January, suffering their first loss of league points this season with a 1-1 draw against Utrecht and being eliminated from the Dutch Cup with a 0-1 loss to Feyenoord. However, this doesn’t change their status as the primary contenders for the national championship.
Without a doubt, the favored Farmers are confidently progressing towards their first Eredivisie title in five years. It would take a miracle for them to lose their massive 10-point lead over defending champions Feyenoord, who are currently in second place. The Farmers have managed to secure maximum points in 17 of the first 18 rounds this season.
PSV’s unusual lack of attacking firepower has been the primary reason behind their single victory in their last three games across all competitions. They have only managed to score four goals during these games, which is quite surprising considering Bosz’s team struck the opposition’s net an impressive 59 times during the first half of the season, averaging 3.5 goals per match.
Despite the Eindhoven club boasting recent dominance over Ajax, including a 5-2 thrashing earlier this season, we reckon the in-form Amsterdammers will show their teeth and manage to grab a point at the very least in front of their home fans. A rain of goals at the Johan Cruyff Arena should not be missed, so a high-scoring share of the spoils could be on the cards.

Ajax team news
Undoubtedly, Ajax head coach John van ‘t Schip will maintain the 4-3-3 formation that orchestrated a breathtaking comeback, entrusting Brian Brobbey with the striker role, as he accounted for a third of the goals in his team’s opening three matches in the new 2024.
The defensive duo of Josip Sutalo and Gaston Avila is guaranteed to remain out of contention, while it is anticipated that the key striker Chuba Akpom will overcome his illness in time after being absent from the last two matches.
