We’re in for an exhilarating game on Thursday night as Sporting CP and Benfica go head-to-head in the first semi-final match of the Portuguese Cup.
Sporting has displayed some fantastic performances this season, however, they’ve already faltered twice during key games. They suffered a 0-1 defeat to Braga in the semi-finals of the League Cup. Additionally, they missed the opportunity to equalize points with Liga leaders, Benfica, when they ended up tying 3-3 with Rio Ave last weekend.
Despite their semi-final exit in the League Cup, Benfica has been an exciting team to watch thereafter. The Eagles have not lost in any competition since their defeat to Real Sociedad in Spain during the Champions League group stage in November 2023. Their most recent victory was a resounding 4-0 triumph over Portimonense.
Sporting CP vs Benfica Betting Tips: Over 2.5 goals
When I saw this fixture, the first thought that popped into my head was goals. Sporting has the highest goal record in Liga Portugal this season, with their recent home scoring record being impressive. Rúben Amorim’s team has managed to score a minimum of four goals in four out of their last five home games. Even though it’s unlikely they’ll score four against Benfica, I anticipate a significant amount of goals from the home team.
Benfica should not be underestimated in terms of goal scoring. In seven out of their last eight games, Roger Schmidt’s team has netted a minimum of two goals, with only a single game concluding with less than 2.5 goals. Furthermore, the most recent games between Sporting and Benfica have been quite thrilling, with each of the last three matches witnessing more than two goals.
- Best Tip: Over 2.5 goals
- Sporting CP vs Benfica prediction: 2-1

Sporting CP team news
Sporting CP head coach Rúben Amorim will not have Francisco Trincão available on Thursday, due to an injury he sustained in the draw against Rio Ave last weekend.
The former Barcelona player’s absence could mean a starting position for Marcus Edwards, who previously came on as a substitute, in Thursday’s game. Eduardo Quaresma is also potentially starting in defence.
Paulinho, who has been absent from the last four games due to tendinitis, is also included in Sporting’s injury list.

Benfica team news
Juan Bernat, who has been sidelined due to pubalgia since November last year as far as Benfica is concerned, won’t be able to participate in Thursday’s game as it comes too soon for the left-back.
Ãngel Di María’s recent goal against Portimonese brings his total to 13 goals in all competitions this season. The Argentine is anticipated to team up again with Rafa Silva and João Mário in the final third.

Three reasons I expect at least three goals in this game
- Only one of Benfica’s last seven games ended with under 2.5 goals.
- More than two goals were produced in five of Sporting’s last seven games.
- In six of the last seven matches between Sporting and Benfica, more than 2.5 goals were scored.
